How do you make assessments?
We look at the information you have provided and assess how your health is affected by where you are living. This could be
- You have no medical need to move (0 rehousing points)
- A move would help improve your situation (10 rehousing points)
- A move would significantly improve your circumstances (25 rehousing points)
- You have an emergency need to leave your home (50 rehousing points)
Do I need a letter from my doctor?
No, all we need is a copy of your prescription or a GP printout and for you to explain how your housing situation is affecting your health.
Why is there only one award of points per household for medical, social and welfare needs?
We look at each household’s medical, social and welfare needs to build up an overall picture of their situation and the urgency for a move.
The Council’s allocation policy must balance several different types of need, for example overcrowding and homelessness. Medical, social and welfare needs are closely linked and an award per household ensures a balanced approach.
I have more than one medical issue, why do I only get one award of points?
People often have more than one medical issue. We look holistically at the impact of all of them to assess the overall need to move.
Do you consider mental health issues?
Mental illness is just as important as physical issues and is assessed in the same way. The more information you can provide us with the easier it is for an assessment to be made. It may help to ask a carer or someone who knows you well to complete the form.
Why don’t my medical points apply for all types of property?
Medical points are awarded where a customer needs to move due to a medical condition and ensures that their medical need would be improved. The Allocation Policy specifies that the award of medical points can be subject to specific conditions and these will be detailed in the points letter to the customer. For example where a customer has mobility problems medical points may be awarded but only apply when bids for ground floor / lift access properties are made, or, if the customer has been assessed as requiring an adapted property they would only apply for adapted properties.
Do you make any further enquiries?
The most important thing is how you are personally affected by your housing situation, so what you tell us and the evidence you provide is most important. We may request further evidence if we do not have enough information to make an assessment. Please note we are unable to contact your GP on your behalf.
I have a serious illness but have not been given many points. Why is that?
We look at the link between where you are living and your medical situation. This means someone could have a very serious illness, but a move to a different home may not have a great deal of impact upon their wellbeing. For example, if someone has a very serious mobility issue, but are already living in a fully adapted property.
What if I disagree with your decision?
Once your medical need has been assessed if substantial new evidence is uploaded a re-assessment can be carried out. You can also amend your medical form, to tell us any new information.
The information you provide on your medical form and all supporting evidence is assessed in line with the Stockport Council Allocations Policy. You can ask for a review of our Medical Assessment and a different officer will review the decision however it will assist us if you can explain the reasons for your request. Details of how to request this are found in your medical outcome letter.
